Cabrera lifts Reds to walk-off win

CINCINNATI -- The Reds rallied for three runs in the ninth inning off closer Kerry Wood to take two of three from the Cubs with a 4-3 victory before 37,540 fans at Great American Ball Park on Sunday. The Reds struck first to take a 1-0 lead on Sean Marshall in the second inning. Edwin Encarnacion picked up a one-out single before Jay Bruce was hit by a pitch and Ryan Hanigan walked to load the bases. Corey Patterson's sacrifice fly scored Encarnacion, who just escaped being tagged out as Micah Hoffpauir's throw skipped past catcher Geovany Soto. Aside from their scoring threat in the fourth inning, which ended with Joey Votto being thrown out at the plate after a Hanigan flyout to Alfonso Soriano, the Reds didn't put many scares into Marshall and the Cubs' bullpen until the ninth. When the Cubs picked up their first run against Harang in the fourth inning, it was considered a victory for the Reds. The Cubs loaded the bases with no outs on three straight singles, but could only plate one, as Harang induced Soto to ground into a double play and then retired Mark DeRosa to end the threat. The Cubs took control in the seventh inning when Harang lost his. Harang put Soto and DeRosa on with two beanballs -- his first two of the season -- before Ronny Cedeno's bloop double put the Cubs up 2-1 and Mike Fontenot's pinch-hit sacrifice fly tacked on another for insurance. Harang added two more walks in the inning to load the bases before escaping on Derrek Lee's forceout. All told, the 30-year-old right-hander went seven innings, giving up those three runs on six hits, while striking out five and walking three to go along with his two big hit batsmen. The Reds got to Wood in the ninth when Encarnacion led off with a bloop single to center and Bruce followed with a walk to bring the winning run to the plate. The winning run was then put on first when Javier Valentin walked with one out to load the bases. Chris Dickerson's single up the middle, which was muffed by Cedeno, allowed two runners to score and tied the game. Jolbert Cabrera's single to left brought home pinch-runner Wilkin Castillo and gave the Reds the improbable victory.
