Right-handed reliever Brian Wolfe landed on the 15-day disabled list on April 18 with a strain in his right triceps muscle.
"I'm feeling a lot better," Wolfe said Friday. "A lot of the inflammation is out of there so it's feeling a lot better."
The 15-day period ends Saturday, but Wolfe has not picked up a ball since going on the DL and is at least a week to 10 days away from returning to duty.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons expects Wolfe to play catch in the outfield sometime soon. If that goes well, Wolfe would likely head to the Minors for a rehab stint before rejoining the Jays. So far, no date has been set for Wolfe's throwing session.
"We've got to get him working," Gibbons said. "He's going to go down, when he's ready, for a little rehab thing."
As for closer B.J. Ryan, the one year anniversary of his Tommy John elbow ligament reconstruction surgery is May 10. The Jays have been cautious about using Ryan on back-to-back days as he recovers from the procedure, and are continuing with that approach.
Gibbons said Ryan is "gaining strength," but is still not at 100 percent. Still, strong performances from the likes of Jesse Carlson and Shawn Camp have lessened the blow.
"We feel we've got enough guys down there to get us through on nights when he [Ryan] is not available," Gibbons said. "That's significant."
No less important has been the performance of Toronto's starters, who have worked at least seven innings in each of the past six games. That's made finding regular work for his seven-man bullpen a tough task for Gibbons, but the manager isn't complaining.
"The starters have been so good, you can't use any of [the relievers] really. That's the way you want it, you know?"
