Russell to rest Capps in finale

PITTSBURGH -- It doesn't appear that closer Matt Capps will be able to find a way to convince manager John Russell again.

Not 24 hours after Capps pitched in his fourth game in as many days, Russell said that he will go in a different direction if a save situation arises in Thursday's game.

"I'd say it's about 99.999 percent sure that he isn't going to pitch today," Russell said before the series finale against the Nationals. "I don't think it's fair to him. I don't think it's fair to the club to push him one more day."

Before this four-day stretch, Capps had made four appearances in four days just one other time in his young big league career. He has thrown 64 pitches in the past four games, games that included three saves as well as his first blown save.

With Wednesday's save, Capps now has 16 saves this season -- fourth most in the National League.

With Capps unavailable, Russell will lean on righty Tyler Yates and left-handers Damaso Marte and John Grabow to carry the late-inning load. Any of the three could be called on in a save situation, Russell said, and it will be how those late innings progress that will dictate who it would end up being.

"It's nice that we have some options to do that," Russell said.

All three have at least minimal experience closing games in the past, with Marte having picked up 31 saves during his four-year tenure with the White Sox.
